The Beckhams have often been referred to as Britain's "unofficial royal family". But now it seems David will receive an official royal accolade, in the shape of an OBE. The soccer star is to be presented with the award at the Queen's birthday honours, which are to be announced later this week.

It will be regarded as a tribute not only to his skills as an athlete, but also his performance as a role model off the pitch. The 28-year-old is a devoted husband and father, and his stardom remains untainted by scandal.

"It's superb news," said his father Ted at the weekend. "I imagine he'll think 'blimey, I'm only 28 and I've got an OBE'."

David and his wife may soon be leaving Britain, however. Rumours of a move to Italian club AC Milan have been fuelled by reports of career opportunities for Victoria. Apparently Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who is also president of AC Milan, is willing to give the former Spice Girl a high profile job in one of his TV stations.

The arrangement would see the club paying up to £50 million for David, while Victoria would receive a three-year TV contract. Speaking at the weekend, AC Milan managing director Adriano Galliani admitted: "Beckham is in our sights and we are pursuing him."

David and his wife are currently considering their options as they enjoy a break in Beverly Hills. The couple, who have been on a publicity drive in the US, have rented an opulent £11,000-a-week villa as they take some time out from their hectic schedule.
