Hollywood went green on Wednesday, when some of the movie industry's biggest names turned out for a special environmental awards banquet. Pierce Brosnan and Charlize Theron were among the stars demonstrating their support for renewable energy sources at the Green Cross Millennium Awards.

The annual ceremony recognises the personalities and organisations that have worked hardest to create a more eco-friendly world. And this year the founder of Green Cross International, former Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev, was also honoured for his continuing efforts to protect the planet.

Last year's winner Leonardo DiCaprio was there too, overcoming his well-known distaste for the press to sign a "Pledge Of Allegiance To American Energy Independence" in front of a horde of snappers. The Green Cross is hoping the document will convince Congress to tackle the US dependence on fossil fuels.

The glamorous guests also made a promise to use fuel efficient cars in the future. A roll-call of A-listers have already undertaken the pledge, with the likes of Charlize Theron, Marcia Gay Harden, Tim Robbins, Sting and Robin Williams all arriving at this year's Oscars in alternative fuel vehicles.
