Golf isn't exactly famous for its fashion finesse, so celebrity watchers who went along to the All Star Celebrity Cup in Wales this weekend weren't expecting to see too many glitzy gowns. Organisers of the charity event managed to get around the problem by staging a gala dinner, though, and big name guests like Catherine Zeta-Jones and Charlotte Church weren't about to miss their chance to turn on the style. The Tinseltown actress took to the red carpet in a glittering halterneck number, while her husband Michael Douglas was sporting a shimmering blue suit. And Charlotte likewise set the flashbulbs blazing in floor-length silver satin, with her hunky leading man, Gavin Henson, cutting a dashing figure in a tailored black suit and open-neck shirt.
Once Sunday morning arrived it was time to head for the green. The charity event pitted an American against a European one, so Catherine and her hubby found themselves on opposite sides.
Nobody seemed to be taking the tournament too seriously, however, as raising money for good causes was the main issue. Jodie Kidd, Ronan Keating, James Nesbitt and Gavin Henson all teed off for the European team, which was headed up by Scottish golfing ace Colin Montgomerie.
Their efforts couldn't stop the American team taking an early lead at the Celtic Manor Resort, though. Asked why he and his team-mates seemed to be falling behind their opponents, Chris Evans said their penchant for late-night revelry might have been a factor.
"With the greatest respect to our American friends, there were none of them in the entertainment facilities of the hotel after 10pm," he revealed. "At about 1.15am, Colin looked at me and shook his head because the whole of the European team were in the bar. He said to me 'Oh well, this is our way and this is how we won the battle of Trafalgar'."
