Set during the Great Depression, the series follows a middle class housewife who divorces her husband and goes on to raise the couple's children.

Forced to take on a job as a waitress to make ends meet - much to the disgust of her oldest child - Kate's character soon finds herself caught up in a story of intrigue and murder. It’s a role the Reading-born actress has evidently fallen into with ease, looking every inch an authentic Forties housewife in a floral dress with a matching brown hat, coat and shoes as she was filmed buying a newspaper from a nearby stand.

The mum-of-two stars in the drama with Australian star Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood, who takes on the role of Kate's ungrateful eldest daughter Veda.

Based on a novel written by James M Cain in 1941, Mildred Pierce was made into a feature film four years later starring Joan Crawford who won the best actress Oscar for her leading role. The TV adaptation is being filmed throughout April and will be aired later this year.
