Elton John sings Bruce Springsteen's praises as he is named MusiCare's Person of the Year

Elton John, Johnny Depp and Katy Perry were amongst a host of stars paying tribute to music legend Bruce Springsteen. On Friday night Bruce was named MusiCare's Person of the Year at a glamorous gala in Los Angeles. The Streets of Philadelphia singer, known as 'The Boss' celebrated at the LA Convention Center with his wife Patti, children Sam and Jessica, mother and sister by his side.

The MusiCares Foundation, which offers support to musicians in financial or medical difficulty, chose to honour Bruce for his musical legacy and philanthropy. Artists such as Sting, Faith Hill, Neil Young and John Legend were amongst those who turned out to see the New Jersey-born star receive his prestigious accolade and were treated to a performance by Your Song hit maker Elton before Bruce himself took to the stage.

After playing a selection of his greatest tunes, Bruce gave a touching speech in which he said "I have always been interested in measuring the distance between the American dream and the American reality"The best music is essentially there for people to have something with which to face the world." Thanks to his latest honour Bruce is in good company as previous MusiCares People of the Year winners include U2 front man Bono, Tony Bennett, Phil Collins, Neil Diamond and Aretha Franklin.

The Recording Academy, who are also responsible for the Grammy Awards, held the charity gala just three days before more musical talent is awarded at Sunday's ceremony.
