Tom Hanks is mourning the loss of his mother Janet Marylyn Frager. The Oscar-winning actor announced the sad news of her passing on Tuesday, posting a tribute in honour of the 84-year-old.
The Forrest Gump star shared a vintage photo of his mum on Instagram, writing, "This beauty? My mom. She was the difference in many lives. Many lives. We say goodbye to her today. Safe crossing, mom! Hanx."

The actor's wife, Rita Wilson, followed suit, penning a sweet message for her late mother-in-law. Posting a happy image of her husband and Janet, she wrote, "This wonderful lady gave birth to my husband, and three other children."
She added, "Thank you for bringing my love into the world. She is at peace now."
The sad news comes just a few days after Tom celebrated his birthday. The Toy Story star turned 60 on 9 July, and Rita honoured the milestone with a special birthday post. Alongside a photo of her beloved husband, she wrote: "Happy Birthday #tomhanks, the love of my life, my best friend, loving father, kick ass grandfather. We love you!!!"

Earlier this year, Tom became emotional during an appearance on Desert Island Discs as he opened up about his nomadic childhood living with his father Amos following his parents' divorce.
After listening to the theme song to 2001: A Space Odyssey, the star said that particular piece of music had helped him as he struggled with the "vocabulary of loneliness" in his head.
Tom and his siblings Larry and Sarah went to live with their father following the split, staying in 10 houses in five years, while their younger brother Jim stayed with their mother.
