Having lived his life in the public eye ever since he rose to stardom as a teen idol in 80's hit series 21 Jump Street, it's hard to imagine there's anything still left unknown about Hollywood megastar Johnny Depp. But some interesting facts about the 54-year-old actor have managed to slip under the radar. Here's some extra info you may have missed about the Pirates of The Caribbean star...
He owns an island in the Bahamas
Johnny paid $3.6million (£2.8million) to purchase Little Hay's Pond Cay Island in the Bahamas in 2004. The island has six beaches named after his children, Lily-Rose and John, known as Jack, and his former partner Vanessa Paradis, as well as a palm-tree lined lagoon and solar-powered houses. In 2015, he and his then-new partner, Amber Heard, tied the knot on the island in front of just 24 people, following a legal ceremony in Los Angeles.
He has recorded with British rock sensation Oasis
Johnny played slide guitar on their song Fade In-Out, from their hit album Be Here Now, released in 1997, which went on to become the fastest selling album in British chart history. According to MTV, Oasis leader Noel Gallagher's then-wife was a friend of Johnny's then-girlfriend, Kate Moss, and they all came together at the same time on the Caribbean island of Mustique. Johnny was all ready to help out Noel, who did not play slide guitar himself, but needed it for a song he had written.
His head teacher encouraged him to be a rockstar
Before he was a pirate, he was a rocker. Johnny dropped out of high school a year after his parents' divorce to follow his dreams of being a rockstar. He tried to go back to school two weeks later under the orders of his parents, but was refused by his head teacher who told him to follow his dreams and go be a musician - how inspiring!
He is going to Glastonbury!
Glastonbury festival is introducing cinema this year with a new Cineramageddon tent, and Johnny, as guest of honour, will be joining festival junkies to present his three favourite films, The Libertine, Withnail & I, and Dead Man, and to speak about what the films mean to him with director Julian Temple. The film choices will then be screened throughout the night for fans to enjoy.
His first marriage was to make-up artist Lori Anne Allison in 1983
Before there was Amber Heard and Vanessa Paradis, there was Lori Anne Allison. Johnny married the make-up artist, also the sister of his former band's bass player, when he was just 20 years old. At the time he was working odd jobs trying to support his new wife, until she eventually got him his first break by introducing him to Nicolas Cage. They parted ways in 1985 following two years of marriage.
The pair are still said to be close, with Lori coming to Johnny's defence following accusations of abuse by Amber Heard after the collapse of their marriage last year. According to TMZ, Lori never believed that Johnny was capable of abuse against Amber. Lori claimed that Johnny was a "soft person" who treated his pets like his children.
He has coulrophobia
That is, a fear of clowns. "I have this fear of clowns" the actor has previously revealed. "So I think that if I surround myself with them it will ward off all evil!"
His daughter was hospitalised in 2007 for an E.coli infection which led to temporary lung failure
Lily-Rose Depp is now well-known in her own right for her high-flying modelling career- she is a Chanel muse after all- but back in 2007, Johnny revealed on the Graham Norton Show he went through "the darkest period in my life" when his daughter was admitted to Great Ormond Street hospital for nine days for kidney failure caused by E.coli poisoning. At the time, Johnny dressed himself up as Captain Jack Sparrow to cheer up the children at the hospital, admitting on the show: "For me it's a gift. They give me the gift."
Nicolas Cage got him into acting
He was introduced to Nicolas Cage through his first wife, Lori Anne Allison, and Nicolas was reportedly the one to tell Johnny to pursue acting as a career. Nicolas also arranged for him to meet with his agent, which eventually landed Johnny his first role in A Nightmare on Elm Street.
He's never won an Oscar
Despite being a three-time Academy Award nominee and winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor, coupled with the Screen Actor's Guild Award for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role,Johnny Depp has never once won an Oscar. Perhaps the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales film, or his upcoming role as anti-virus software developer John McAfee in King of the Jungle will change this fate.
He's the 20th cousin of Queen Elizabeth II
He's already considered Hollywood royalty, but it turns out that 54-year-old actor is royalty in real life too, being the 20th cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. According to Nick Barratt, a genealogist for the BBC show Who Do You Think You Are, Johnny shares a connection with the Queen through a mutual great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather.
