For those with a penchant for people watching, a night at the opera offers far more than just the chance to hear some uplifting music. And those lucky enough to have a ticket for the New York Metropolitan Opera's opening night were spoiled for choice, as the event was positively awash with A-list stars.

British heart-throb Jude Law was looking characteristically dashing when he arrived for the glitzy soiree with on-off girlfriend Sienna Miller and her mother Jo. "This is my first opera," confessed the 24-year-old actress, who was sporting an elegant two-tone number. "It's amazing, it's beautiful."

And catwalk veteran Iman, who was accompanied by her husband David Bowie, was looking equally stunning when she made her entrance in a strapless, floor-length gown. Liv Tyler meanwhile opted for vintage-style white, while Aussie beauty Naomi Watts was looking rather more sensual in a gathered chiffon creation with plunging neckline.

Photographers gathered alongside the 200ft-long red carpet were also delighted to see Scottish legend Sean Connery rolling up with his wife Micheline Roquebrune. And In The Cut actress Meg Ryan likewise sent the snappers into a frenzy when she arrived at the venue.

Once inside the auditorium the audience was treated to a virtuoso performance of Puccini's Madame Butterfly. But with so many big names taking their seats for the recital, some of the audience might have been forgiven for being more focussed on the audience than what was happening on the stage.
