Ten years ago today Mean Girls was released in the United States. Now, it is a cult classic and is widely considered to have been the reinvention of the teen genre.
"On Wednesdays we wear pink" Starring Lindsay Lohan , Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried , Mean Girls was written by Tina Fey and followed Lindsay’s Cady Heron, a teenage girl who arrives in Ohio to begin her junior year at North Shore High School after leaving Africa.
There, she befriends social outcasts Janis and Damian before later being recruited to join The Plastics, the most popular group of girls in school.
Speaking to the New York Times ,Tina remembered her research for the script, talking about the politics of being a teenage girl in high school. "I revisited high school behaviours of my own—futile, poisonous, bitter behaviours that served no purpose," Tina said, before adding: "That thing of someone saying, 'You're really pretty,' and then, when the other person thanks them, saying, 'Oh, so you agree? You think you're pretty?' That happened in my school. That was a bear trap."
Tina Fey and Lindsay Lohan at the 2004 premiere of Mean Girls Lizzy Caplan starred as Janis Ian, one of the first people to make Cady feel at home at North Shore, and she spoke of the strong connection she felt to Janis. "I think all girls that age are looking for their 'thing.' I was fairly angsty in high school," she said. Earlier in 2014, pictures of Taylor Swift hanging out Mean Girls cast members Daniel Franzese and Rajiv Surendra stoked long held rumours that a Mean Girls musical could be on the way. Tina confirmed to the New York Times that they were trying to write something, and admitted: "I wish so badly we could have had it done in some form for the 10th anniversary, but hopefully before the 15th."
