Nadia Sawalha broke down in tears as she opened up about losing her hair in a candid Facebook video on Tuesday evening, saying she has lost a third of her hair in recent years. While Nadia attributes going through the perimenopause to her own hair loss, there are a number of factors that can lead women to shed more hair than normal. Hair loss expert Lucinda Ellery shares her tips on how to deal with the effects…

1. The first thing you should do is make sure there are no underlying issues. Things such as an underactive thyroid and polycystic ovaries can all lead to hair loss so it's important to get checked by a doctor. You can also see a dermatologist. There are a number of medications out there that can help with hair loss, although this doesn't mean the hair will fully grow back afterwards.

2. Next look for disguises to hide the hair loss as you never get a second chance to make a first impression. There are fantastic make-up options out there that can help to hide any problem area. The powders that you shake on your scalp diffuse the light to stop it reflecting off your hair, which is what makes your hair look thin.

3. Hair loss can cause a huge amount of stress for a woman and it is vital you look after your mental well-being. You need to take great care of yourself in order to make sure it does not deflate you. Take action and feel positive as what you feel will attract more of the same. Yoga, meditation and Pilates are all great for stress relieving.

4. Make sure you have a good diet, you exercise regularly and get a good night's sleep. These are all things that affect your mental and physical wellbeing and it's so important to look after yourself.

5. If you are looking for a more permanent solution there are some amazing options out there such as the intralace system which women have been using for over three decades. The intralace system is a breathable mesh that is integrated into your existing hair which means women can wash, brush, sleep, style, swim, shower and even swing from the chandelier with nobody the wiser! Think of it as a modern way of dealing with hair loss no different to getting your nails done or putting in contact lenses Lucinda Ellery has studios in London, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh and the West Midlands.
