That "lethal" combination did not lend itself to a lengthy union. After months of break-up rumours – in late 1983 a rep admitted they were trying to "overcome their mutual problems so that their marriage can survive" – the fiercely independent actress filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
"I married the wrong person," reflected Rod later. "We were always miles apart. I think nine times out of ten, men have to be pushed into marriage and I was no different." The split was initially bitter, but the former pair later earned a reputation for getting along famously.
