After long months at sea and a series of epic battles, Naval officer John Lapenotiere wanted only to see a friendly face upon his arrival home in England. The intrepid seaman got a pleasant surprise when he dropped anchor in the port of Falmouth, though, as Princess Anne herself was waiting on the dock to greet him.

The commander would have been forgiven for feeling a little worn out, as 200 years had passed since he originally set sail to bring back news of Britain's victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. Dressed in his long black cape and cocked hat, the sailor cut an impressive figure as he stepped ashore and accepted the Princess Royal's welcome. Anne, who herself holds the rank of Rear Admiral, had gone along to take part in a commemorative re-enactment celebrating the anniversary of the battle.
Actor Alex Price, who was playing the role of Lt Lapenotiere, wasn't only the bearer of good tidings, though. "We've won the battle and beaten the combined fleets of France and Spain under the command of Napoleon," he declared. "But we have lost Lord Nelson, who died at the height of the battle. That is something I mourn greatly as I'm sure most of Britain will do."
Despite his long journey the commander had barely a moment to catch his breath before jumping aboard a post chaise and speeding off to London. After all, King George was anxiously waiting for news of how his flotilla had fared in the confrontation. |
