Alexandra and her boys get into their stride for charity

After spending the last few weeks on holiday with their father Joachim in France, it was the turn of Denmark's little princes Nikolai - seven in a week's time - and four-year-old Felix to spend quality time with their mother Alexandra. At the weekend the boys put their best foot forward for charity joining the royal on a six-kilometre walkathon in Copenhagen organised by shoe company ECCO.

The princess and her children are regulars at the event, which in the past has attracted crowds of up to 20,000, and raised funds for organisations like the country's Heart Association, UNICEF and the World Wildlife Fund.

Proving he's inherited his mother's ease with the cameras, Nikolai happily joined in as Alexandra was interviewed. To coax her eldest boy into answering some questions for the TV crew, the 42-year-old royal crouched down besides him and gave him a reassuring smile. His mother's encouragement didn't seem to have the same effect on his younger brother, who sucked his thumb shyly when it was his turn for the limelight.

Known for her tireless humanitarian work, Alexandra may well regard events like Sunday's walk as the perfect arena to introduce the boys to their future responsibilities as royals. Since they separated in 2004, Queen Margrethe's second son, Joachim and the mother of his children have presented a united front in their parental duties. And Alexandra, in particular, glows with pride whenever she mentions her sons in public.
