When Prince Frederik planted an enthusiastic kiss on a pretty young sportswoman, it was all in the line of duty, of course. The keen yachtsman was helping Denmark's female sailors celebrate their win in the World Match Racing Championship.
The heir to the Danish throne puckered up after a nail-biting finale in which the Scandinavian team just pipped their neighbours Sweden to the post. And even his wife Princess Mary will have thought the congratulatory smacker was well-deserved, since the crew members had to contend with high winds and rain, as well as a broken mast, during the four-day regatta.
Besides getting up close and personal with royalty, the ladies' festivities included spraying champagne over everyone in the line of fire. Frederik niftily ducked out of the way, narrowly avoiding getting splashed. But he didn't object to the offer of a sip of bubbly straight from the bottle.
The renowned sportsman has himself tasted triumph in several of the challenging races he's entered across the globe. Although in a 'warm-up' event to his and Mary's 2004 nuptials, the prince lost out to his then fianceé. But on that occasion Tasmanian-born Mary did have a helping hand from her fellow countryman, America's Cup legend John Bertrand.
