Dancing in each other's arms with the sound of New York, New York ringing in their ears, Hillary Clinton and her husband, former US president Bill Clinton, saw in the New Year with hundreds of fellow revellers in Times Square.

With their personal troubles of 1998 a distant memory, the happy couple looked on top of the world as they joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg to start the 60-second countdown to midnight.

Hillary and her proud husband certainly have much to celebrate. As 2009 dawned the couple look forward to a year in which Hillary is set to be appointed Secretary of State under Barack Obama.

The former First Lady and her husband were not the only famous faces helping New Yorkers celebrate the start of a new year. Entertainment for those who braved the cold came in the form of Lionel Richie and popular American boy band The Jonas Brothers.
