The Queen has posted her second ever tweet to thank fans for the birthday wishes she received on social media. The 90-year-old monarch wrote and personally sent the message herself, with photo evidence proving that she did.

Writing from the comfort of her home Buckingham Palace in London, the Queen tweeted: "I am most grateful for the many digital messages of goodwill I have received and would like to thank you all for your kindness. Elizabeth R."

An aide confirmed in a follow-up post: "This tweet was personally sent by Her Majesty The Queen."

The Queen typed the message from her tablet in Buckingham Palace

The royal, who was her usual sunny self in a bright pink floral dress, was pictured typing away on a tablet.

Her Majesty has become somewhat of a Twitter sensation. Her thoughtful message was "favourited" more than 3,000 times within the hour that it was posted, with several followers leaving comments.

"God bless you, Your Majesty. A true inspiration and the greatest servant of this Realm," wrote one fan, while another replied, "Oh my god, Queenie. I love you."

She sent her first tweet in October 2014

This is the second time the Queen has used Twitter to communicate with members of the public. She sent her first tweet in October 2014 when she was visiting London's Science Museum to officially open their Information Age exhibition.

She wrote: "It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R."

The monarch became a social media sensation when she starred in an Instagram video with Prince Harry

Earlier this year in April, the nation also praised Her Majesty for her social media presence when she appeared in a jokey video with her grandson Prince Harry to promote the Invictus Games.

The good-natured monarch was seen giving a smirk and saying "Oh, really?" after the Obamas "threatened" Team GB with their "fight talk".

Entering her tenth decade, the Queen has always been one to embrace modern technology. She has been using a mobile phone since 2001 and her grandsons Princes William and Harry have shown her how to send and receive text messages.

While she has never made a phone call on it in public, the Queen, who also owns an iPod, is understood to use her mobile while she is outdoors at Balmoral and Sandringham Estate.
