Why September is an exciting month for these royal babies

September usually means the start of the school year for children across Europe, and royal youngsters are no different. Belgium's royal children went back to school last week, while Spain's Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia are starting in a few days.

Even the youngest members of the royal families – the adorable babies – will play starring roles at engagements this autumn.

On Friday Prince Alexander of Sweden, the newborn son of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, will be baptised at the Drottningholm Palace Church.

Prince Alexander of Sweden will be baptised on Friday

The baby boy, who is four months old, will take centre stage as he is christened in front of his family and godparents.

The ceremony will be steeped in tradition; Alexander will wear the same christening gown that was first worn by Prince Gustaf Adolf in 1906 and he will be baptised using water from a spring on the island of Öland – a long-standing custom.

Prince Oscar will visit New York for the first time with his mum Princess Victoria

Just ten days later on 19 September his cousin Prince Oscar will embark on his first official trip abroad with his mum Crown Princess Victoria. Oscar, who was born in March, is the second child of Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel and is currently third-in-line to the throne.

The future queen of Sweden will attend meetings and conferences at the United Nations headquarters in New York, and is taking her son on his first visit to the Big Apple.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte may be joining their parents on tour to Canada

Oscar isn't the only royal baby who will be making his official debut abroad. It has been rumoured that Princess Charlotte and her big brother Prince George will join their parents Prince William and Kate on tour to Canada.

The Cambridges are confirmed to fly to Canada on 24 September, but will we be seeing George and Charlotte? If so, it would be 16-month-old Charlotte's first tour abroad. George, meanwhile, embarked on his first tour when he was eight months old, accompanying his parents to Australia and New Zealand.
