Rock chick Kate Moss and her boyfriend Pete Doherty have swapped life in the fast line for the decidedly more sedate pace of the Mediterranean. The much talked-about couple have been enjoying a few days away from the pressures of London on the island of Sardinia.

The pair spent the weekend relaxing in the upmarket resort of Porto Cervo which is located on the island's northeastern coast. In recent years the picturesque village has become accustomed to receiving A-list guests, with actors Christian Slater and Denzel Washington having both been seduced by its charms.

Although the surrounding territory is steeped in history, Porto Cervo is actually a relatively modern development. Work on its luxurious cream and white villas, with their terracotta-tiled roofs, first began in 1962. Since then it has grown into one of the Mediterranean's most exclusive getaways, with almost all of the accommodation being of four- or five-star standard.

The pedestrianised Piazzetta area in the centre of the town likewise caters to well-heeled guests, with Gucci, Cartier and Bulgari shops standing virtually side by side. Those with the right connections can also enjoy a night out in Formula One boss Flavio Briatore's appropriately-named venue The Billionaire's Club.

Its upmarket social bustle aside, the one thing that continues to attract jetsetters to Porto Cervo year after year is its reputation for tranquillity. With most of its hotels and villas located outside the town centre, the resort offers those lucky enough to come visiting an oasis of complete calm.
