Star holidaymakers wander off beaten path

While it seems that the most popular celebrity hotspots this year are St Tropez and Sardinia, at least two famous faces have chosen to go their own way for some fun in the sun.

Hunky Spanish flamenco dancer Joaquin Cortes is soaking up the rays in Forte dei Marmi, Italy, the chic – and famously expensive – resort that is considered one of the most exclusive in Tuscany.

Located 65 kilometres northwest of Florence, the seaside village is a favourite holiday destination for Italy's elite, drawn to its white sand beaches, trendy café culture and glamorous nightlife. The charming old town's 18th-century fort is Forte dei Marmi's centrepiece, but the modern shopper will certainly find some dazzling sights at the Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabanna and Versace boutiques nestled in the shopping district.

Meanwhile, Sean Connery is enjoying the old world charm of Turkey's serene Prince's Islands, just a short ferry ride from bustling Istanbul. With no motorised vehicles allowed on the nine-island archipelago – only four are inhabited – peace and quiet is almost absolutely guaranteed.

Horsedrawn carriages are the preferred mode of transport for visitors, who can visit shops and bazaars or explore the old villas and monasteries which dot the islands, named for the princes exiled there by Byzantine emperors.
