Hollywood romance: big-screen ideas for your wedding day

July 13, 2010

Romantic films are perfect for a night out with girlfriends or a quiet Sunday in with your significant other. But, when it comes to planning weddings, they provide plenty of inspiration as well. Take a look back at some memorable silver screen nuptials from recent years to find unique ideas that you can use on your special day. Rachel Getting Married (2008)

Anne Hathaway received her first Oscar nomination for her role in this dramatic film, which features a singular wedding with lots of romantic and bohemian details. Add a multicultural touch to your own nuptials by incorporating some of the movie's touches, such as mauve silk saris for the bridesmaids, flower necklaces for the groom and hundreds of colourful lights. In Rachel Getting Married , Anne's character makes her grand entrance to live jazz and rock music and later delights in a custom cake in the form of Ganesha, the sacred elephant of the Hindu religion.

27 Dresses (2008)

Katherine Heigl stars in this story of love between an eternal bridesmaid and a cynical reporter who writes about the Big Apple's lavish society weddings. The best character is the jack-of-all-trades maid of honour, who can always be counted on to put the finishing touches on the endless details that are involved in planning the wedding of your dreams.

Love Actually (2003)

The ultimate romantic film, Love Actually tells nine love stories and begins with one of the most romantic scenes to be seen on the big screen. When Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor's characters tie the knot, there's a wonderful element of surprise: a live performance of the Beatles' All You Need Is Love, organised as a gift to the couple from a friend.

The Wedding Planner (2001)

In this movie, Jennifer Lopez plays a more-than-efficient wedding planner who makes even the most extravagant bridal dreams come true. If you need help with your wedding, hire this type of service to keep your plans on track.

Sex and the City (2008)

Fans around the world followed the epic love story of Carrie Bradsaw and Mr Big for years on the small screen before they finally watched them say 'I do' in cinemas. In the end, the couple exchanged vows in a simple, intimate civil service, but only after they had planned a lavish wedding, with a haute coutur Vivienne Westwood gown included. Though the original plans didn't work out, one detail is unforgettable: Carrie decides to marry in the magnificent New York Public Library, inspiring brides to spare no expense on their special day.

Bride Wars (2009)

If you're looking for inspiration for your bridal look, this recent movie is filled with style ideas. Starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson , Bride Wars includes impressive gowns from Vera Wang, which are a must-have indulgence for the most fashion-forward brides.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

Mothers, sisters and bridesmaids can sometimes overwhelm the bride when it comes to making decisions for her big day. In this modern-day Cinderella story, the main character, played by Nia Vardalos, faces pressure to include endless family traditions while planning her nuptials. But in the end, she proves that what matters the most is simply enjoying your wedding day with loved ones, no matter how it turns out.
