Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest bride of all?

June 1, 2012

Few versions of Snow White's wicked stepmother have dazzled like the spectacular Julia Roberts in the recent adaptation of the fairy tale classic, Mirror Mirror. Dressed from head to toe by creative genius designer Eiko Ishioka, the witch was literally transformed into one of the most beautiful brides of the kingdom, with or without the magic mirror.

The secret lies in the more than 100,000 Swarovski crystals, in 20 different tones, embroidered on the wedding dress that the actress wore on screen throughout the film. Many of these crystals were distributed over the spectacular vine skirt with intertwining fabric, an appropriate symbol of the twisted nature of the character. Ishioka is a rare gem capable of creating costumes worthy of an Oscar.

The designer is also the proud creator of the disturbing wedding dress of the bride in Bram Stoker's Dracula, for which she received an Oscar in 1992. She created many of the other brilliant costumes for the Snow White film, jointly starred by Julia Roberts and Lily Collins. Sadly, these outfits are the final contribution of the Japanese designer to the imagination of Hollywood films, as she passed away last January, leaving this spectacular gown as her final legacy.
