The Duchess of Cambridge: A lesson in wedding day style

February 28, 2013

With the recent bridal wear debut from one of the hottest celebrity designers around, we can't help but be inspired by one of Roland Mouret's most famous designs – Kate Middleton's split thigh gown.Wearing one of her most daring looks to date at a private engagement at Claridges in London 2012, the Duchess of Cambridge wowed onlookers in a show-stopping floor length cream gown which gave glimpses of her right leg – à la Angelina Jolie at the Oscars that year.

And it's a trend has been steadily gaining ground in recent months. From Jennifer Aniston, Rihanna to Jennifer Lopez, celebrities seem to love this red carpet look to show off a big of leg. With the catwalk filled with split-dress designs, brides-to-be have plenty of variations to choose from for weddings in 2013.

From flowing bohemian gowns to sharp, structured designs the key is to pick a dress that features a high-neckline and long sleeves to keep the look demure rather than over-exposed.

We love the soft silks and simple lines of slim-fitting silhouettes from the catwalk's of Viktor & Rolf, Valentin Yudashkin, Francesco Scognamiglio, and Yves Saint Laurent this season. Backless cuts are another great way to show of skin in a subtle way as seen on the runway of Jenny Packham – another of Kate's favourite stylists. But like Prince William's wife, pulling off the look for your big day should be all about keeping other areas of your wedding day outfit simple yet chic. A stunning pair of shoes similar to Kate's glittering Jimmy Choo's wouldn't go amiss and, with jewellery, go for either a statement necklace or earrings but refrain from overdoing it with both.
