April 23, 2014

Fashion designer Mary Katrantzou has tried her hand at bridal wear and created her very first wedding dress .The Greek beauty was asked to create an ivory gown for Carolina Gonzalez-Bunster, the founder of Walkabout Foundation, and couldn't help but share her masterpiece online with a series of photos on Instagram. While Mary is known for her geometric patterns, digital prints and lavish embellishments, the London-based designer was tasked with creating a one-coloured garment for Carolina's big day.

The gown, inspired from Mary's Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 collections, featured a "sporty" neckline and a "cake a flake" ruffled skirt, which the bride took great joy in swishing about as she was pictured dancing at the reception.

The dress, which was made out of 120meters of chiffon muslin and crinoline support, was just as Carolina wanted it to be — "modern and original".

"One thing she really wanted was lots of fabric and movement, so the focus was on the skirt and designing it in a way that it appears effortless," Mary told

W Magazine

."We didn't feel it was necessary to embellish it — it was more about the movement of the dress. Everyone was playing with it all night long and she danced and swirled in it for eight hours! It wasn't a simple dress but it had a purity in its design and its lines that I think really suited her."

After eight fittings, Mary had crafted the "perfect dress" for her first bridal customer and in return, the designer was invited to the wedding in the Dominican Republic. "Carolina and I became really close friends throughout the process," said Mary. "She was so open and positive and even though I had never done a wedding dress before, she really trusted me to create the perfect dress for her. When it all came together I felt so humbled to be part of such a special day in her life. It felt like I'd known her for years."

For now, the brunette beauty added that she had no plans to design a full bridal collection. "It's such a great experience if you feel inspired by the person you are designing it for," she said. "It's a very intimate experience and a time consuming one, too, so it has to feel right."

Mary herself looked glamorous on the day, donning a white mini dress and leopard print cardigan, which she teamed with giant diamond earrings.
