When Amal Alamuddin made her grand entrance at her Venetian wedding to George Clooney last Saturday, the bride wowed not only her Hollywood groom but the dozens of A-lister guests in attendance. Amal, 36, was the epitome of romance and tradition in her bespoke Oscar de la Renta gown, which was hand-embroidered with pearls and diamanté accents and made of lace especially flown in from France. Her exquisite wedding dress had echoes of another famous bride who walked down the aisle just over a year ago – Princess Madeleine of Sweden.

Like the Swedish royal who married in a Valentino design, Amal's gown featured a gorgeous lace overlay and demure slightly off-the-shoulder straps. Amal's cream confection ended in a sweeping circular train adorned with Chantilly lace appliqué, while Madeleine's train extended further to four metres in length. Both women were an angelic vision, opting for the traditional lace-edged veil to complete their bridal look. Madeleine's veil was a real talking point on her day – trailing almost five metres long and made from silk organza, edged with point d'esprit dots and small Chantilly lace orange blossom.

As for their bridal jewellery, Madeleine donned a royal tiara and a pair of large diamond drop earrings to match. Amal, meanwhile, was gifted a set of natural pearl earrings with square-cut diamond accents from her parents Baria and Ramzi. The items were made by Lebanese jeweller Chatila, which will have struck a chord with Amal given her Lebanese roots. George and Amal tied the knot in a private ceremony at the luxury Aman Canal Grande hotel in Venice.
