Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg shared the first photos from her civil ceremony with Nicolas Bagory on Saturday 22 April, and fans were left surprised by one of the guests.

The royal, 31, and her 33-year-old partner, who works in social and cultural projects, were pictured at Luxembourg City Hall with the Grand Ducal family, including Alexandra's parents Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa and her siblings Prince Guillaume, 40, Prince Felix, 38, Prince Louis, 36, and Prince Sébastien, 30.

While very few photos of Nicolas' family have been released, one group shot shows the mother of the groom in a controversial outfit. Nicolas' mother wore a black lacy column dress with a midi skirt which was mostly covered with a crisp white jacket, complete with a bow at the shoulder, wrap-over bodice and tulip midi silhouette.

The colour choice was unusual since wedding guests tend to avoid white in order to prevent upstaging the bride. Alexandra looked beautiful in a bridal white Natan blouse and trousers, complete with a fitted waist sash, romantic cuffed sleeves and an elegant boat neckline.

To finish off her royal ensemble, she teamed it with a Valentino wool cape, a Chanel leather bag, pointed-toe heels, an immaculate nude manicure and her brunette hair into a sophisticated half-up, half-down style.

Meanwhile, her husband looked dapper in a navy suit and blue tie, while the other royal guests chose pastel ensembles, including yellows and pinks.

"Why is the mother in law wearing white?" asked one follower, while others commented on Grand Duchess Teresa: "Radiant and always stunning mother of the bride."

After the 30-minute ceremony, which saw the couple sitting at a table in front of Mayor Lydie Polfer, Alexandra and Nicolas met crowds before heading to a private wedding reception. The Grand Ducal Court said on Instagram: "As they left the wedding room, the new couple warmly greeted a group of schoolchildren, people with reduced mobility and members of the 'Fondation Lëtzebuerger Blannevereenegung' who had come to congratulate them.

"Princess Alexandra, Mr. Nicolas Bagory and the Grand Ducal Family then took a moment to greet the crowd."

Alexandra and Nicolas are set to hold a religious wedding on 29 April at Saint Trophyme church in Bormes-Les-Mimosas, France.
