Former BBC Breakfast star Dan Walker admitted his work commitments caused him to cancel a family holiday earlier this year, but he made it up to his wife by whisking her away to Portugal this week.

The TV presenter rarely shares photos of Sarah and their kids Susanna, Jessica and Joe on social media, but he made an exception to share a peek inside his joyful holiday. As part of a slideshow of photos, Dan shared a snap of himself with his arm wrapped around his wife as they stood on oceanside rocks and looked out to sea.

The happy couple cuddled up in warm trousers and jackets in the cooler weather, while the cameraman – who was likely either his son or daughters – stood inside a cave to capture the shot.

"When we had to cancel a long-planned holiday at Easter (because of work) I promised my family we would go somewhere special this October half-term and our trip to Portugal has been amazing.

"We are staying at the gorgeous @vilavitaparcresort which so many people have told us lovely things about. It is a gorgeous place, the kids have loved it and everyone here goes out of their way to make it special. We have eaten so much gorgeous food and have made some lovely memories," Dan captioned the post, which also included clips of the sunrise over the beach, the delicious cheese and meat platters and the pool at their accommodation.

The father-of-two joked he would have to return "mostly because I lost at the crazy golf," before sharing another rare clip of his kids calling him "annoying" during the competitive family game.

"Got absolutely destroyed on the course today on our family holiday at @vilavitaparcresort in Portugal but delighted to say I upheld the time-honoured tradition of being an annoying dad at crazy golf," Dan joked next to a video of him dressed in shorts and sunglasses as he pretended to play to a crowd.

After waving to nobody, the journalist did a few practice putts before gently tapping the ball down the hill where his children stood watching unapprovingly. Dan finished his turn by confidently guiding the ball into the hole with his putter between his legs.

The couple share three kids

Dan and Sarah met in 1999 when they were both studying at the University of Sheffield, where he was awarded a Masters degree in broadcast journalism.

The couple dated for two years before tying the knot in 2001, but they have remained very private about their relationship by releasing no photos of their big day.

Dan paid a sweet tribute to his wife on Strictly Come Dancing

Dan paid a rare tribute to his wife while competing in Strictly Come Dancing, telling the audience he was dedicating his romantic Viennese Waltz to Sarah since it was performed to her favourite song, She’s Always A Woman by Billy Joel.

"I'm just going to gush over her for a moment," he told host Claudia Winkleman. "Because she's one of those people, the more you know her the more you love her. And I've known her and loved her for over half my life."

As the camera turned to her, Dan continued: "There she is, she's absolutely amazing, she's such a special person and I love her to bits. I hope she enjoyed that because we really loved it."
