After having publicly stated they continued “to be committed to the long-term success of their marriage” despite having split up over a year ago, Jane Fonda has filed for divorce from Ted Turner, her husband of eight years. The fitness guru and former actress stated in court documents that their marriage was “irretrievably broken”.
The same day the papers were filed, an American magazine published an interview with Turner in which he said that his wife’s decision to become a Christian had played a part in the end of their relationship. “She just came home and said she’d become a Christian. Before that she was not a religious person. That’s a pretty big change for your wife of many years to tell you. That’s a shock,” he said.
Fonda says: “My becoming a Christian upset him very much – for good reason. He’s my husband and I chose not to discuss it with him – because he would have talked me out of it. He’s a debating champion.” Turner is a confirmed atheist, having lost his faith when his sister died of a painful disease.
The couple, for both of whom it was a third marriage, have already reached a decision on how their extensive assets will be divided up.
