Former Beatle George Harrison has undergone surgery for lung cancer in the United States but is said to have made an “excellent recovery”. The rocker visited the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for treatment to remove a cancerous growth from one of his lungs.

“The operation was successful and George has made an excellent recovery,” according to a statement from his lawyers. “He is in the best of spirits and on top form – the most relaxed and free since the attack on him in 1999. He is now enjoying a holiday in Tuscany.” It is unsure exactly when this surgery took place.

This is not George’s first battle with cancer. He was treated in August 1997 for throat cancer after finding a lump on his neck. “I gave up cigarettes many years ago, but had started again for awhile and then stopped in 1997,” he later said. “Luckily for me they found that this nodule was more of a warning than anything else. There are many different types of cancerous cells and this was a very basic type.”

The attack alluded to in the most recent statement above occurred in late 1999 when a crazed fan, 34-year-old Michael Abram, broke into George’s Henley-on-Thames home, stabbing him ten times and puncturing one his lungs. Abram was acquitted on grounds of insanity before being confined to a mental hospital. The Quiet Beatle’s 1970 solo epic All Things Must Pass was recently re-released as a two CD set.
