It would seem all is well once more between David Letterman and Colombia’s entry in the Miss Universe contest, Andrea Noceti.
The beauty queen had threatened to sue the top US talk show host after he made a comment during the opening monologue of his programme about her swallowing bagged heroin – a common method for smuggling the drug – in order to impress Miss Universe judges in the “talent” section of the event.
Letterman has apparently now apologised for the joke, saying “There was no intention to offend her or the people of Colombia”, and invited Andrea to appear on his show – an offer which the beautiful Colombian has accepted.
A top beauty queen in her homeland, Andrea – who was knocked out of the competition in the first round – had said she was “totally outraged” by the comments, adding that they made light of the country’s civil war.
Letterman’s “humour” also went down badly with other Colombians who are tired of being stereotyped as drug traffickers. After the programme aired, the country’s consul in New York lodged an official protest and members of America’s Colombian community threatened to demonstrate outside the studios of the show’s producers, CBS.
