Monica Lewinsky is asking that prosecutors return the semen- stained blue dress which led to the impeachment of former president Bill Clinton.
The dark navy coat dress from The Gap was worn by the 27-year-old White House intern during sex romps with Clinton in his den just off the Oval office. It was instrumental in proving that the two had sexual relations when DNA tests on the stains proved it was Clinton’s.
After the liaison, Monica never wore the garment again and decided not to have it dry-cleaned after fellow White House worker Linda Tripp told her it could be used in evidence. When the investigation came to an end the dress was not returned to her.
Although Monica has said that she would never sell the dress – when once asked what she would do with it should it be returned, she replied “I’d burn it” – it is estimated that the garment could raise as much as £400,000 if sold at auction. Such a sum would make it the most expensive dress to come under the hammer since the gown worn by Marilyn Monroe when she sang Happy Birthday Mr President.
A spokesman for independent counsel Kenneth Starr's former office in Washington said Miss Lewinsky’s request would be “addressed in due time”.
