Rotund Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti teamed up with hip swivelling Welsh crooner Tom Jones to perform a duet in Modena, Italy, on Tuesday night. The two sang a rendition of Tom’s hallmark 1968 song Delilah at the tenor’s annual charity concert in aid of Afghan refugees, with Tom taking the lead and the Italian adding his parts in his native tongue.

Among the celebrities present was one who shares both Mr Jones’s name and nationality. Swansea-born Catherine Zeta-Jones introduced her countryman’s performance of his recent hit Sex Bomb.

Other performers at the evening – the proceeds from which go to the United Nations refugee fund – included Anastacia and Morcheeba. The Italian tenor also teamed up with American soul legend Barry White on You’re My First, My Last, My Everything, and Britain’s female string quartet Bond.

Fleeing from civil war and the worst drought in memory, more than 200,000 Afghans have taken refuge in Pakistan since September, joining over two million of their countrymen who have made their home there for two decades. The government of the impoverished country has now refused to admit any more asylum seekers.
