Britney Spears’s profile continues to soar as the singer signs up for diverse new projects guaranteed to keep her very much in the public eye.

The latest to join the pantheon of personalities inked to the 19-year-old pop star is Pope John Paul II. Along with fellow musicians ’N Sync and Faith Hill, the sexy teen will record a spoken-word CD of the pontiff’s prayers.

The disc, which will be released in the US in time for this year’s Christmas season, will accompany a seven-volume collection of the Pope’s personal writings entitled The Private Prayer Books Of Pope John Paul II. A portion of the profits from sales of the project will go to charities selected by the Vatican.

Taking on a very different, but equally high profile role, Britney will also be serving as grand marshal for the Pepsi 400 car race, America’s largest night-time sporting event. At her command the event’s 43 drivers will start up their engines in front of 200,000-strong crowds at the Daytona, Florida, track. The event will be watched on TV by millions of American race fans.

Meanwhile, Britney’s tiff with Madonna has also been making headlines recently. The Material Mom apparently saw red after discovering that the young pretender to her Queen of Pop crown had plotted to join her onstage in a surprise duet.

The Oops…I Did It Again singer – already out of favour with her idol after asking her to play her boozy mum in a film – had gone all out to engineer the opportunity to join her onstage. But when Madonna got wind of the plan she told concert chiefs “No way!”. Apparently Maddy feared the younger singer was trying to upstage her, and using the opportunity to boost publicity for her own show.
