Twenty luxury cars belonging to Sir Elton John, including a 1993 Jaguar valued at upwards of £130,000, are scheduled to go under the hammer at Christie’s in London on Tuesday. The singer’s “garage” sale, the biggest auction of automobiles belonging to a single celebrity ever, is expected to raise £1 million.

“I’m sad about it going but you have to cut ties loose,” says the flamboyant 54-year-old entertainer. “I’d rather they went to people who can get pleasure out of them every day.” Elton, often out of the country touring, says he never has a chance to drive the cars.

Also up for grabs is a series of Bentleys, including a metallic blue 1975 Corniche Convertible Elton once used to chauffeur Princess Margaret to the cinema.

Insiders expect a 1978 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Coupe – dubbed “The Beast” because of its engine’s roar – to fetch between £20,000 and £30,000. Elton is holding on to just eight cars from the collection he began nearly 30 years ago.

Automobile aficionados including millionaire Tim Jeffries and Lord Rothschild turned out last Tuesday night to view the offerings at a champagne preview. Elton and his partner David Furnish spent 30 minutes at the event, gabbing about the prized motors – all kept in heated garages – before departing.
