Troubled comedian Michael Barrymore has flown to the US in search of counselling for his emotional problems. Police gave the 49-year-old TV presenter permission to travel abroad following his Wednesday arrest on drug charges and subsequent release on bail without charge.
“The addictions are only symptoms of his underlying mental problems,” says one friend of the TV star. “Michael has assured his bosses at ITV that he is determined to get well. He may take a while to resolve his problems until he goes back to work, and everybody accepts that.”
Barrymore, who is believed to have checked into the renowned Meadows Clinic in Arizona, was questioned this week by officers following the death of a man in his swimming pool two months ago and taken to Harlow police station by detectives investigating the case. Two other men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Stuart Lubbock, a butchery worker, who was found floating face down in the star’s swimming pool at his house in Essex.
The British TV star, who returned from a break in Dubai on Tuesday night, was questioned on suspicion of possessing and supplying a class B drug, possessing a class A drug and allowing premises to be used for the taking of class B drugs. Witnesses at the police station said the comedian arrived in an unmarked car and said nothing to waiting journalists.
Insiders say TV chiefs will not renew Barrymore’s £2 million a year contract. Friend Brian Conley is said to be being groomed to step into the popular presenter’s shoes. However, Barrymore’s agent insists no action has been taken: “No immediate decision will be taken about Michael’s future work commitments but ITV and LWT have welcomed his decision to undergo treatment.”
