Sharon Stone’s husband is recovering in hospital after being bitten by a Komodo dragon at Los Angeles Zoo over the weekend. Phil Bronstein was in the dragon’s cage with a zoo keeper when the 10-foot-long rare Indonesian lizard attacked him. Ironically, Bronstein was shoeless at the time of the attack, as the keeper had told him to remove his white trainers, saying that the beast, who normally feasts on a diet of white rats, might mistake his shoes for its lunch.
Bronstein, the executive editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, had surgery to reattach severed tendons and rebuild the casing of his big toe, which was crushed by the dragon’s jaws. He was also treated with antibiotics and will be monitored for possible infection, as the dragon’s saliva can contain up to seven highly septic bacteria, as its serrated teeth harbour bits of meat from previous meals. The dragon has been quarantined.
Phil’s wife Sharon, who is currently suing Hollywood executives for pulling out of a sequel to Basic Instinct, was watching from outside the cage. “We certainly don’t blame the people at the zoo,” she said from her husband’s bedside. “And we’re very grateful for the professional care of the people at the hospital.”
She had given the behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo to her husband as an early father’s day present, who had always wanted to see a Komodo dragon up close. The couple have a year-old son, Roan.
