Eighties pop diva Alison Moyet is to join the cast of the West End musical Chicago. The singer, who notched up sales of 20 million records during her solo career, which included hit singles That Ole Devil Called Love and Is This Love, takes over the role of Mama Morton for a 13 week-run.

In doing so, the singer will be working alongside fellow Essex native Denise Van Outen. “It will be great working with Denise,” says Alison. “As a fellow Basildon girl, it will be like working with the Essex mafia.”

Alison said she decided to try out for the show after seeing a performance earlier in the year and being impressed by its dark plot. “I thought it was very me. I loved the style of the show – it was dark and sinister and very atmospheric.”

The 40-year-old mother of three admitted to feeling a little nervous about her new career: “I never even appeared in a play or musical at school so I am really cutting my teeth. But the rest of the cast have been very helpful,” she says. Being back in the workplace has its attractions, however. “I am looking forward to having a job where I go out to work six days a week because I haven’t done that since I was 16,” she added.
