Pete Sampras suffered a surprise fourth-round loss to Roger Federer on Monday, dashing his hopes of adding a record eighth Wimbledon trophy to his mantelpiece. Following the disappointing loss, Pistol Pete left Centre Court but vowed: “I’ll be back.”
“I feel like I can, without question, come back and win here,” the American champion said after losing a gruelling five-set match to the Swiss teenager. “You know, if not next year, then maybe the year after it. I’ve got the game. There’s no reason to feel like I can’t do it anymore. I feel like I’ve got the goods out there.”
“One minute you feel like you have it, and the next minute you’re walking off the court,” Pete said, before leaving the All England Club with his wife, Hollywood actress Bridgette Wilson. “You know, all I can do is rebound from a kind of disappointing year and get ready for the summer. It’s going to take me awhile to get over this one… It’s a tough, tough loss to deal with it.”
Meanwhile British fans praying for a win have pinned their dreams on Tim Henman, the last Brit standing. He defeated American Todd Martin in five sets on Tuesday afternoon.
UK hero Greg Rusedski tumbled out of the tournament on Monday, losing to unseeded Croatian player Goran Ivanisevic.
On the women’s side, favourite Jennifer Capriati advances after defeating Serena Williams on Centre Court on Tuesday in a tough three-set Quarter Final match.
