Pop diva Mariah Carey checked herself into an undisclosed hospital on Wednesday citing “extreme exhaustion,” her publicist reports.
“She’s been working around the clock,” says her spokesman Cindi Berger. “Carey has been hospitalised for extreme exhaustion after completing two movies, Glitter and Wise Girls, and simultaneously writing, recording and producing her album, the soundtrack Glitter.”
“What I’d like to do is just take a little break or at least get one night of sleep without someone popping up about a video,” Carey wrote in a rambling message to fans on her official website. “All I really want is to just be me and that’s what I should have done in the first place… I don’t say this much, but guess what, I don’t take care of myself.”
“I’m trying to understand things in my life right now and so I really don’t feel that I should be doing music right now,” she said in an audio message also posted on the site. “But I just can’t trust anybody anymore right now because I don’t understand what’s going on… I’m desperately trying to get out of this room. And I don’t know if that makes any sense to anybody… I’m gonna be taking some time off.”
The messages were subsequently removed from the website, www.mariahcarey.com. “She was obviously very tired and not thinking clearly,” says Berger of the singer’s postings.
Mariah was scheduled to perform at next week’s MTV 20th anniversary bash in New York, but has now pulled out of the gig. The Heartbreaker singer has also cancelled the upcoming press junket for Glitter.
The top-selling singer first set off alarm bells last week when she made an impromptu appearance on MTV’s wildly popular top ten video countdown show Total Request Live. Seemingly dressed in just a lavender t-shirt bearing the word “Loverboy”, the name of her latest single, she dropped by the studio pushing an ice cream cart filled with treats for members of the studio audience. The Honey singer later stripped off the t-shirt, which she gave to host Carson Daly as a present, to reveal a tight tank top and skimpy shorts.
“She just hasn’t been herself for a little while, and it just caught up with her,” Berger said in response to the TRL appearance.
The diva’s one-time steamy relationship with Latin singer Luis Miguel has reportedly cooled, though Berger declined to comment, offering only this: “Luis is concerned about her.”
Mariah’s feature film debut Glitter, the story of an aspiring pop star, opens across the US on August 31 before hitting UK cinemas later this year. The soundtrack, Mariah’s first album of entirely original material since 1999’s Rainbow, is due on August 21.
