Pop diva Mariah Carey remains “under psychiatric care” in an undisclosed New York facility after suffering “an emotional and physical breakdown”, reports her spokesperson Cindi Berger. Mariah checked herself into hospital on Wednesday night claiming “extreme exhaustion”, but it now seems as if her problems are more severe.
“She’s getting a little stronger each day,” says her publicist. “Right now, everything is on hold.”
Reports of Mariah’s condition vary, but her representative remains firm on certain rumours. “Mariah did break some dishes and glasses and may have cut her foot in the process, but she definitely did not hurt herself intentionally,” says Cindi. And, despite reports to the contrary, Mariah and her boyfriend of three years, Latin heart-throb Luis Miguel, “have not officially broken up,” Cindi states. “He is very concerned about her.”
The 31-year-old singer had been under intense pressure of late, having just wrapped two films, Glitter and Wise Girls, and delivered a new album to her Virgin record team. Mariah reportedly hit a low point after glancing at her pager in a hair salon recently and seeing 297 new messages flash on the screen.
“What I’d like to do is just take a little break or at least get one night of sleep without someone popping up about a video,” Mariah wrote in a rambling message to fans on her official website. “All I really want is to just be me and that’s what I should have done in the first place… I don’t say this much, but guess what, I don’t take care of myself.”
The messages were subsequently removed from the site, www.mariahcarey.com. “She was obviously very tired and not thinking clearly,” says Cindi of the singer’s postings.
Mariah has cancelled all upcoming appearances, including a planned performance at Wednesday’s 20th anniversary bash for MTV. The press junket for her feature-film debut Glitter has been indefinitely postponed, though the movie is still scheduled to hit US cinemas on August 31. Virgin will go ahead with the August 21 release of the singer’s latest album, the eagerly-awaited soundtrack to Glitter, which has already spawned the top-selling single Loverboy.
