Any hope of Frank Bruno’s divorce going through quietly was dashed yesterday – by the former boxer and pantomime star himself. His wife issued a statement on Tuesday saying: “Laura Bruno wishes it to be known that she and Frank Bruno are nearing the completion of their divorce proceedings”, after her husband made unflattering comments about their marriage on a television programme.
During the filming of Celebrity Sleepover the one-time heavyweight boxer – who lost the world heavyweight title bout against Mike Tyson in 1996 – had a go at his wife of 11 years. Asked how his life had changed since boxing, 39-year-old Frank replied: “I wish I was still boxing now to be quite honest, rather than stay at home and listen to moaning, moaning, moaning. I just wanted to get out of the house, away from all the hysteria and the nagging all the time.”
It is far from the harmonious picture painted by Frank in a newspaper interview just four months ago, claiming that he and Laura had patched up their differences. “I am delighted to say that we haven’t divorced,” he said. “I am the sort of person who gives 210 per cent to whatever I care about. At one time I put all my energies into boxing. Now I put it into my marriage.”
Frank and Laura, who met at an ice rink in 1980, have three children – Nicola, 19, Rachel, 14, and six-year-old Franklin. But the boxer claimed that long periods away from home had alienated him from his daughters. “The two girls couldn’t be ruder if they tried, but that is their mother’s side. They haven’t got one ounce of respect for me, one little bit. I try to sit them down and school them, but the little boy’s the only one with a bit of respect.”
