He has been called a lot worse things than “fat” in the past but handsome footballer David Ginola is taking his football club to court over alleged disparaging remarks about his physique. The French winger, known for his suave looks and his model locks, is claiming he has been victimised by Aston Villa FC manager John Gregory – and his case is to be taken up by Britain’s most famous QC –Cherie Blair.
Tony Blair’s wife has been on the phone to the Professional Footballers’ Association, according to its chief executive, Gordon Taylor. “Cherie Blair rang me before she went to Argentina with her family,” he said. “She was very sympathetic to David Ginola’s case and wanted to check out footballing procedures.
The Red Cross ambassador and L’Oréal spokesman is alleging that he was subject to defamatory remarks about his physique last season. Gordon Taylor has already been in touch with the club’s chairman, Doug Ellis, as well as John Gregory, in an attempt to defuse the row, but the PFA head said. “John Gregory told me he was entitled to do with his players as he wished.”
Last night, David’s agent Chantelle Stanley was saying nothing, as was a spokeswoman from Cherie’s Matrix chambers, who refused to confirm whether she is representing the footballer.
