In the upcoming Farrelly brothers comedy Shallow Hal, Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow morphs into a 370-pound leading lady by donning a fat suit for laughs. However, the leggy beauty recently learned just how skin-deep beauty really is when she strode through a New York hotel lobby saddled with the extra weight and decidedly incognito.
“The first day I tried it on, I was in the Tribeca Grand, and I walked through the lobby,” says the 28-year-old star. “It was so sad; it was disturbing. No one would make eye contact with me because I was obese.”
“I was wearing this black shirt with big snowmen on it,” she says. “The clothes they make for women that are overweight are horrible. I felt humiliated because people were really dismissive.”
To achieve the realistic look, Gwyneth spent three hours in the make-up chair stepping into the state-of-the-art suit, however, manoeuvring in the get-up proved to be a weighty issue. “It was horrible,” says the Sliding Doors actress of the six-piece disguise. “There was no ventilation whatsoever. I thought I was going to pass out.”
Shallow Hal opens across the US in November before hitting UK screens.
