English football fans received some good news on Thursday night when England captain David Beckham announced he’d be fit for the weekend’s all-important World Cup qualifier against Germany. The Manchester United hero suffered a groin injury last week and feared the worst, however, after several days of intensive treatment he is confident that he’ll be well enough for Saturday’s match.

“I had a run this morning and felt great,” David said on Thursday. “I was gutted on Sunday. I thought I had no chance of even meeting up but then I had some laser treatment and massage and now I think I will be fit for Saturday.”

David’s positive forecast on his health buoyed the spirits of his faithful fans. “You want to play in the big games and they don’t get any bigger than this,” he said. He remained realistic about his condition, however. “I’m ready to play. But it’s up to me to be professional enough to tell the manager if I’m not. That’ll be hard, but if I think I’ll only last ten or 15 minutes then I won’t play.”

The 27-year-old captain will undergo a fitness test on Friday, kicking a ball for the first time since last week’s injury. However, the final decision won’t be made until Saturday. And while he admits that the last ball he struck was painful, he’s willing to grin and bear it on Saturday. “If it results in a goal I don’t mind doing my groin in.”

David is determined to lead his team to victory at Munich’s Olympic Stadium. The Brits lost out to Germany back in October and the wounds from that loss are still fresh. “The way we felt was what we want to make the Germans feel tomorrow,” says Posh Spice’s husband. “We were so disappointed, not just because it was the Germans but also the last game at Wembley. We were annoyed with ourselves and upset for the fans because we know how much everyone wanted to win. We all know we let ourselves down but this is the chance to get our own back.”
