When Frances Shand Kydd arrived at the door of Westminster Abbey for the funeral of her daughter Diana, Princess of Wales, there was more than grief to deal with. The abbey brought back difficult memories.

“For me, the fact that the service was to be held at Westminster Abbey was a challenge in itself. The last time I’d been there, I had walked up the aisle to marry her father,” she recalls.

Flanked by her two surviving daughters, Sarah and Jane, she looked erect and in control of her emotions. But, she says, “my fear was great. I remember going into the abbey and thinking when I got inside, ‘Well, that’s one hurdle over.’”

Frances lives on the Scottish Island of Seil, where she has been for almost the past 30 years and it is rare for her to talk publicly about her daughter.

In this week’s issue of HELLO!, Princess Diana’s mother speaks movingly, not only about how she dealt with her daughter’s loss, but also about the pride she feels for the rest of her family.

"In the end, strange as it may seem, Diana's funeral was probably the proudest day of my life as a mother."
