Britain’s chirpy young celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver, and his wife Jules are expecting a baby. News of the pregnancy was especially welcome to the couple as 26-year-old Jules suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome which makes it difficult to conceive. The new arrival is due in six months.
Talking about the treatment with powerful fertility drugs his wife underwent at Hammersmith Hospital in west London, Jamie admitted: “It has all been quite nerve racking really. I’ve never been that nervous about anything before. It’s not like worrying about whether your bread is going to rise or not.”
In an interview on Britain’s Radio Four, the millionaire chef confirmed: “Jules is just over three months now, so it’s a little bit safe now to say that she’s pregnant. It’ll be a well-cooked baby, that’s for sure.” Although the couple learnt they were expecting two months ago, they kept the news under wraps until Jules had been for her 13-week hospital check-up.
Cheeky Jamie, who rose to fame with his irreverent approach to cooking and “pukka” catch phrase in BBC2’s The Naked Chef, also confessed to feeling a little daunted by the idea of fatherhood. “It isn’t easy, I know that. I’ve seen my sister and sister-in-law. Whenever I phone up and their babies are crying, I think: ‘I’d rather be out grafting’.”
Jamie is certainly no stranger to hard graft. In addition to his Naked Chef programme – the third series of which starts next month – he is scheduled to embark upon a Happy Days cookery show tour in the UK before heading off to Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile, he has put his career with the band Scarlet Division, which is signed to Sony and due to tour the US next year, on hold for the moment.
