Pop star Kylie Minogue has signed on as the new face of Channel Tunnel operator Eurostar, following in the footsteps of Hollywood actor John Malkovich. The Australian beauty can be seen cavorting around the streets of Paris on a spending spree in the upcoming advert, which makes its primetime debut during Friday night’s episode of Coronation Street.
“The commercial has a special feel because of Kylie’s very natural expression of liberation and excitement,” says a spokesman for Eurostar. “Kylie is one of the biggest pop icons of the moment but she’s still approachable. She’s perfect for the company.”
The new promotion shows Kylie enjoying a quick stop in Paris, a favourite getaway of the 33-year-old Aussie. “Paris is great because I can sit in a café and watch the world go by,” she says. “It is nice being an observer for once rather than one of the observed.”
With the release of the Eurostar campaign – her first starring role in a UK commercial – it seems Kylie’s career has gone from the strength to strength. Her new single Can’t Get You Out Of My Head looks poised to top the charts, beating out rival Victoria Beckham’s latest offering in a much-publicised contest, and she recently shared the spotlight with fellow antipodean Nicole Kidman at the UK premiere of Moulin Rouge, in which she has a small part.
“Everyone understands that I am dedicated to my career which is also my way of life,” she says. “And if I am going to be recognised in the street I want to be recognised for something good.”
Kylie’s new album, Fever, hits stores on October 1.
