Tennis superstar Andre Agassi and fiancée Steffi Graf presided over Saturday evening’s Grand Slam For Children concert, an all-star benefit featuring musical performances from Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Brian McKnight. Comic Dennis Miller and model Rachel Hunter – aka the former Mrs Rod Stewart – were on hand for festivities, held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in glitzy Las Vegas.
“These performers share our desire to make the future brighter for kids and have graciously offered their time and talents for our sixth concert fundraiser,” says Andre. “The goal of this event is to continue our commitment to the children of Las Vegas who require our assistance in overcoming the many obstacles they face in their everyday lives.”
The annual bash raised funds for the tennis great’s Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation (AACF), a non-profit-making organisation he formed in 1994 to assist at-risk youth in Las Vegas, the sunny locale where a pint-sized Andre first picked up a tennis racket. Since its inception, the charity has raised $14 million and hosted performances by everyone from the legendary Stevie Nicks to Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion.
Like many recent events, the gala took on special meaning this year in light of the tragic terrorist attacks in New York. No word on how much Andre and friends raised this year, though with corporate sponsorships and a top ticket price nearing $100 promoters expect to exceed 1999’s $4 million take.
