Rival boy bands ’N Sync and Backstreet Boys will join forces for an upcoming star-studded benefit concert in Washington DC to raise funds for victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The heart-throbs are scheduled to join a diverse range of artists from Mick Jagger to Kiss for the RFK Stadium show, an eight-hour marathon concert featuring upwards of twenty acts.
“We wanted to definitely get involved,” says ’N Sync’s Joey Fatone. “We’re going to do something so we can help out.”
“It’s amazing,” reports bandmate Lance Bass. “We have everyone from Aerosmith to Matchbox Twenty, us, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen… So many people are coming out and really supporting this thing… and Michael Jackson will be there. It’ll be big.”
And while Lance may have spoken too soon – Britney was forced to pull out due to scheduling conflicts with her upcoming autumn tour – Ricky Martin, James Brown, Bon Jovi, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Carlos Santana have all reportedly signed on to the bill. Additional acts will be announced as details are confirmed, reports a spokesman from producers Clear Channel Entertainment.
“Music is a common language that brings people together in times of triumph and sadness,” says Clear Channel chairman and CEO Brian Becker. “We support the president’s call for unity and are extremely proud to contribute in any way we can to help these stellar artists raise money to assist in recovery efforts and to show their support for the military who are risking their lives for our safety.”
Tickets for the United We Stand benefit – one of the first major fundraisers to be held in Washington – will go on sale on Friday in the US.
The ’N Sync fundraiser, however, won’t be the only full-scale event that weekend. Paul McCartney’s planned tribute Concert For The Americas is scheduled for Friday evening and includes Eric Clapton, the Who, James Taylor, John Mellencamp, Macy Gray and Melissa Etheridge. Mick Jagger, whose solo album is due in stores Stateside on November 13, will do double-duty that weekend performing at both benefits, as will Bon Jovi and the Goo Goo Dolls.
