The monarch has a treat in store for her when she attends the Royal Variety Performance next month. Top of the bill is none other than her Windsor neighbour Sir Elton John, who will be making his first appearance at the celebrity-filled night since 1972.
Sir Elton will be joined on the stage of the Dominion Theatre in London’s West End by newlywed Jennifer Lopez, teenage singer Charlotte Church and British R’n’B sensation Craig David on November 26. Other British performers who have agreed to do their thing are camp comic Julian Clary, and funnyman Al Murray, whose alter ego The Pub Landlord has many fans.
Jeff Thacker, the spectacle’s producer, yesterday waxed lyrical about the calibre of artistes on the bill. “I feel honoured that so many top international stars from all areas of entertainment have agreed to appear,” he said. “This is one of the most exciting line-ups we have seen in one Royal Variety Performance for many years.
The Royal Variety Performance was first staged in 1912, in front of King George V. Now an institution, the money raised goes to the Entertainment Artistes Benevolent Fund, a charity which looks after retired members of the variety and music hall profession.
An edited version of the show will be screened on ITV at a later date.
