Crown Princess Victoria has been given a crash course in Japanese culture during her official visit to Japan this week. At one point the Swedish heir to the throne donned a traditional kimono, assisted by an expert who helped arrange the elaborate garment.
Since she arrived in the country on Saturday, Victoria has attended a number of functions, including the inauguration of a Swedish art exhibition and a gala dinner in Yokohama. On Tuesday, the 24-year-old princess was guest of honour at a lunch in the royal palace hosted by Crown Prince Naruhito and his wife Crown Princess Masako, who is pregnant. The Japanese royals' baby is due in late November.
After concluding her Japanese visit tomorrow, Victoria is scheduled to travel to Los Angeles, where she will present awards at the Nobel Prize Centennial luncheon honouring youth interested in science. During the trip, which will be the princess’ first official visit to California, Victoria is also due to tour Stanford University and computer firm Sun Microsystems.
The crown princess, Europe’s only female heir to a throne, became next in the line of succession at the age of four when an amendment to Swedish law allowed women to become monarch.
